A research conducted in King’s College London suggested that smoking may contribute to the development of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a type of psychological disorder associated with psychotic symptoms such as hallucination. Persons diagnosed with schizophrenia may experience hearing voices or visualizing strange images. It may also be related with cognitive distortion and detachment from the reality.
Although in the previous researches indicated that persons with Schizophrenia tend to smoke cigarette to cope with the challenges of the pain facilitated by the experiences of hallucination, the present research revealed smoking may be one of the causal factor in the development of schizophrenia. They argued that most of the participants of the research have already started smoking before the experience of the first psychotic episode.
Although further investigation is recommended by the researchers, it is a warning sign for the youth that smoking cigarette is beyond addiction that can paralyze mental function which may lead to severe psychological disorder in addition to the personal and social impacts.
