What are you to marry?

(By Kiram Tadesse)

Indeed, for human, marriage is one of the major social event and after all it is well known that you are going to marry human–since you are a human too –unless otherwise you’ve a desire to seize the world attention with wonder  marriage, perhaps through marrying “some-thing” other than the just ‘human kind’.

In town vibe, wedding beep-beeps are heard and there while the European tradition of Valentine’s Day is making its fresh touch of red and rosy if love look like that.

Marriage, to its scientific definition, is a socially supported union involving two or more individuals in what is regarded as a stable, enduring arrangement based at least in part on a sexual bond of some kind.

Thus, depending on the society, marriage may require religious and/or civil sanction, although some couples may come to be considered married simply by living together for a period of time under what is called common law marriage. In most contemporary industrialized societies, marriage is certified by the government. However, these practices vary among cultures.

For marriage serves several functions it is not who you are going to marry with that sort of human just coming out of the culture variety? Mate selection is the most important event in the life of a person. Therefore, the question would be what you think your mate should come up with. Which is believedto fetch crisis and dispute over what the substance of marring each other was from the beginning. What could be the distinction between the person and their material representation then?

Be it the old days or contemporary societies, various factors influence the mate selection process around the world such as affluence, prettiness, fame, educational background, parental influence, religion, occupation, ethnic background and/or sexual behavior, etc.

In most societies, the mate selection process involves what social scientists call a “marriage market”. Therefore, do you think you will attain superior bargaining power in that market? It is not who! Rather, what are you looking now? Don’t you think one of these factors would influence the next morning after marriage has been declared between you and your spouse?

The husband and wife come together out of a wide range of possible partners. In western societies social rules have gradually changed to permit more freedom of choice for the couple and a greater emphasis on love as the basis for marriage.

But, even happening now, there are different forms of marriages. Including monogamy that involve only two people while polygamy involve multiple partners, polyandry is the practice of brining multiple husbands and polygyny is taking of multiple wives.

On the other hand, nowadays marriage can either be heterosexual which is between people of different sexes or homosexual marriage between individuals of same sex. Generally, religion and most societies globally approve heterosexual and monogamous marriages. However, some societies and religions permit some form of polygamy and marriage between people of the same gender.

In the rural Ethiopian case exchange marriages, and similar types are common. Exchange of sisters and daughters for marriages between two families is considered as ‘exchange marriage’. Endogamy is also common in many [rural] Ethiopian cultures and ethnic groups.

Endogamy is the practice of marrying within a specific ethnic group, class, or social group, rejecting others on such a basis as being unsuitable for marriage or for other close personal relationships. Endogamy is common.
